Algal culture technology appears to be an exciting and future-oriented business area and can further be developed using innovative systems. An increasing number of commercial operators has been producing micro algae globally .It has been recognised that the blue-green algae spirulina is of great importance ,for mankind ,as the best food supplement . Spirulina algae has a number of promising application areas .
Spirulina is gaining greater attention from medical scientists as a nutraceutical and source of potential pharmaceuticals. There are several new scientific studies about Spirulina’’s ability to inhibit viral replication, strengthening of the immune system and cause regression and inhibition of cancers. While these studies are preliminary and more research is needed, the results so far are exciting.
The market of spirulina is ripe for new alternatives since very few studies has been done so for on alternative uses of spirulina.Future research should focus on the improvement of production systems and the genetic modification of strains of spirulina . Micro algal products would in that way may become even more diversified and economically competitive.
