Posted by Piyush Mohapatra on 5/24/2010 4:15:48 PM: At the present era of exploitation by the big corporations, the plights of grass root innovators are need to be adequately addressed. Perhaps the suigeneresis IPR legislations is the answer to this.

Piyush, I am agree with your good comment but in general when we think about innovation, which refer only formal systems of innovation, normally done in universities, industrial R&D laboratories, etc. Often not recognized is the technology innovation that takes place in an informal system of innovation, be it by artisans, farmers, tribes or other grassroot innovators. Indeed many societies in the third world have nurtured and refined systems of knowledge of their own, relating to diverse domains of ecology. These informal innovators have, therefore, generated such a rich store of traditional knowledge and must be protected by sui generis system. For the commercialization of grass root innovation, NRDC is at the same way promoting Rural Technology Demonstration & Training (RTDT) Programme. This programme is trying to pursue development and promotion of technologies in rural areas. Centres are set up in association with NGO’’s in various part of the country to demonstrate the utility of the rural technologies and ensure their faster dissemination through the network. RTDT has so far set up more than 57 RTDT Centres in different parts of the country. It is also proposed to introduce 5 Simputers in the RTDT Centres, which have shown excellence in propagating NRDC’’s rural technologies. NRDC has been participating and facilitating exhibition on rural technologies in all over the country. Similarly, The HoneyBee network managed by National Innovation Foundation (NIF) has created database of 10,000 innovations, collected and documented by SRISTI, would be part of the National Register of Innovations to be managed and supported by NIF.
