Technology development and innovation are the key drivers of long term economic growth and development. Technology development being a interactive process, management of technological change becomes essential. Ensuring sustainable technology change becomes important in the context of the negative side effects of technology on the environment. Emerging technologies besides being very promisive pose considerable risk. Therefore, the framework for emerging technological innovation has to be developed keeping in viewpoint the maximization of societal benefits. Obviously the lessons learned from previous technological developments can guide for a more sustainable development in the case of emerging technologies.
Further successful commercialization of technology i.e., bringing the benefits of new products, new processes into the market is a key challenge. Towards this end the role of partnerships between universities, R&D organizations and industry becomes important with the government playing a facilitative role. In this regard evolving a suitable model of cooperation to accelerate the development of promising technologies becomes quintessential.
