Posted by Bhoopinder Singh Bali on 5/24/2010 4:01:22 PM: The medicinal aromatic and dye plant sector is booming across the world and India with its rich biodiversity and knowledge of traditional medicine is still far behind with merely market share of Rs. 4500 crores only.

The traditional knowledge of medicine is not fully exploited for its commercial benefits and lacks supportive government policies to promote small enterprises and giving due recognition.
---------------------------------

I agree partly that keeping in mind the rich biodiversity of India the amount of funding by the government is not adequate.

But certainly several initiatives are being taken up like the TKDL (Traditional knowledge Digital Library) project. It was started in 2001 and is slated to end in 2008. It is basically an encyclopedia of the country’’s traditional medicine in five languages - English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. So i would sum up it as initiatives are being taken but bot adequate. Also the community is not being well informed.
---------------------------------

Also there are several other initiatives like from National Research Development Corporation "Reaching out to Rural India". Anyone can read more about it from the website http://www.nrdcindia.com/reach-rl.htm

Also NISCAIR has been publishing a research journal "Indian Journal of Traditional Knowledge" from 2003. A nice way of disseminating knowledge. So on whole initiatives are being undertaken. Moreover National Innovation Foundation is played a role in adressing the issues of rural technologies.
