The medicinal aromatic and dye plant sector is booming across the world and India with its rich biodiversity and knowledge of traditional medicine is still far behind with merely market share of Rs. 4500 crores only.
The traditional knowledge of medicine is not fully exploited for its commercial benefits and lacks supportive government policies to promote small enterprises and giving due recognition.
I agree partly that keeping in mind the rich biodiversity of India the amount of funding by the government is not adequate.
But certainly several initiatives are being taken up like the TKDL (Traditional knowledge Digital Library) project. It was started in 2001 and is slated to end in 2008. It is basically an encyclopedia of the country’’s traditional medicine in five languages - English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish. So i would sum up it as initiatives are being taken but bot adequate. Also the community is not being well informed.
